Founded more than 30 years ago by Ruth VanDerVeen, Classic Journeys began as a relationship driven travel agency dedicated to helping clients explore the world with confidence and ease. Alongside her husband of over 50 years, Duke, Ruth transformed a lifelong love of travel into a trusted Northwest Indiana travel planning business known for personalized care and one on one service.

Ruth’s firsthand travel experience spans the globe, including the Caribbean, Mexico, Alaska, Canada, Greece, Italy, Morocco, Oman, Israel, Dubai, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, and many European destinations. Travel has always been part of her family’s life, with one son even living abroad in Spain, Ireland, Anguilla, Nassau, South Africa, and Australia. This real world experience allows Classic Journeys to offer expert insight and customized recommendations for every trip.

After starting in a traditional storefront travel agency, Ruth and Duke recognized the growing need for more personalized travel planning. They transitioned to a home based model focused entirely on their clients’ unique needs. This approach allows them to deliver custom vacations, luxury travel experiences, and once in a lifetime journeys with exceptional attention to detail.

Over the years, Classic Journeys has helped travelers throughout Northwest Indiana and across the country plan unforgettable experiences. These include around the world trips, custom international adventures, family vacations, cruises, and bucket list destinations.

Today, that legacy continues under the leadership of Rachel Firlit, Ruth’s daughter, who has officially taken ownership after more than 13 years working within the agency. Having grown up in the travel industry and explored destinations worldwide, Rachel combines trusted family values with modern travel planning tools, strong global partnerships, and a passion for creating seamless and stress free travel experiences.

While ownership has transitioned, Ruth remains actively involved, sharing her knowledge and long standing industry relationships while enjoying a well earned step toward retirement.
